EMBRYO TRANSFER
Embryo transfer is a technology that is well established in other animal breeds such as cattle and which is becoming more commonly used for horses.
With over 60 embryo transfer offspring on the ground already, KingRidge has established a sound track record for arranging the embryo transfer process and we can use our experience to help you with your embryo transfer plans.
We can arrange an embryo transfer for your own mare or from a qualified mare of your choice in the KingRidge program. It is a useful tool in cases where a mare’s competition program cannot be interrupted or for other reasons.
KingRidge Stables can manage the entire embryo transfer process on your behalf, delivering the resulting foal to you after it is weaned.
The steps involved in an embryo transfer process are:
- breed the mare from semen provided
- flush the embryo at seven days and transfer to a recipient mare. If the recipient mare is at another facility, this can involve shipping the embryo to the recipient mare
- maintain the donor mare
- foaling the donor mare
- caring for mare and foal until weaning delivering weanling to owner
Communication is the key to a successful program. If you plan to ship an embryo, you must let the receiving facility know when your mare is in heat and, most importantly, the day she ovulates. This allows them to ensure that a suitable recipient is available for your mare. It is important when shipping embryos to find professionals with appropriate equipment to breed, flush and handle embryos. It is also important that the embryo, if it is to be shipped, is properly handled. The receiving facility will provide instructions.
Embryos are generally collected from the donor mare on day 7 after ovulation. The first pregnancy check on the recipient mare is day 12 of gestation (5days after the transfer) and a definitive positive or negative is known by day 14 of gestation (7 days after transfer.)
